The GRAVEL path is often parallel; it is a possible alternative for those who are tired<\/p><\/p>\n\n<h3>Description of the stage<\/h3>\n\n<p>The leitmotif of the 3rd stage is the Valle del Torrente Enza, with its ancient communication routes and its historical events.<\/p>\n\n<p>The farm roads along the route, now used for access to woods and fields, were the ancient routes connecting valleys and  mountains, the only access roads to passes such as the Lagastrello Pass.<\/p>\n\n<p>In ancient times these places were famous for a singular historical event. In the \u201cValley of the Knights\u201d there were several small fiefdoms often in quarrel with each other. Between 1200 and mid-1400 these feudal lords managed, also thanks to the \u201cTreaty of Vallisnera\u201d, to maintain a relative autonomy from the Duchies of Parma and Modena.<\/p>\n\n<p>In more recent times, the poor connections and difficult living conditions have led to a strong emigration and the abandonment of the territory. Countries like Succiso were reached by a real road only many years after the Liberation.<\/p>\n\n<p>Cycling  through the many villages, their characteristics and housing types will make the phenomenon of abandonment evident. Succiso is an exception to this.<\/p>\n\n<p>Those who arrive without being aware of  its history will be amazed by a village with recent houses, built in an \u201corderly\u201d fashion  and with  modern roads.<\/p>\n\n<p>Succiso has risen three times. First an earthquake, then a landslide and a \u201cflood\u201d that partially destroyed it, then the exodus and abandonment with the closing of the last bar, the only point of aggregation.<\/p>\n\n<p>The houses show the second rebirth, the \u201cValle dei Cavalieri\u201d Community Cooperative which manages the stopover, is the explanation of the third.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the \u201crisen\u201d bar, a true meeting point of a \u201cliving\u201d country, those wishing to learn more can look for information in a nice illustrated book or even better can ask the local people. They will be happy to tell you how they did it.<\/p>\n\n<h3><p><strong>Alternative route<\/strong><\/p><\/h3>\n\n<p><p><strong>SD-MTB.3A Pizzoni<\/strong> <strong>Difference in height:<\/strong> +280 m -380 m; <strong>Length:<\/strong> 4.7 km; <strong>Difficulty:<\/strong> BC \/ BC<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p><p><strong>Notes:<\/strong> NCB \u2013 OC section on steep slope; two stretches on foot; EE steps to do on foot pushing the bike. Challenging route for expert bikers only, do not cycle it alone, in case of unpredictable weather conditions or wet ground. The area is characterized by a peculiar geological erosion-pattern that creates a \u201clunar\u201d landscape. The view over the course of the river Enza is remarkable. Additional travel time of over 1 hour.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<h3><p><strong>Technical notes<\/strong><\/p><\/h3>\n\n<p><p><strong>Suggested stops:<\/strong> Agriturismo Valle dei Cavalieri \u2013 Community cooperative.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Water-refill station:<\/strong> Vetto, Gottano di Sopra, Taviano, Castagneto, Pieve San Vincenzo, Succiso. <strong>Facilities:<\/strong> Several bars, trattorias and alternative stopping places along the route.
