Madonna della Battaglia – 365 mslm

Antique and gracious small church built over the land theatre of a dramatic battle of the early Medieval Ages.

The name of the “battle” refers to the clash between the armies of the Emperor Henry IV and Matilde of Canossa (1092). The duchess’ forces overwhelmed the Emperor’s.

In 1528 some miracles were reported to have taken place in proximity of the tiny church, which already in 1665 appeared significantly precarious and whose late rebuilt in 1724. The church underwent a further renovation in the 1970s.
