Oratory of the Beata Vergine delle Formiche (Virgin of the Ants) – 650 m slm

It stands on top of the Gottano mountain. Destination of pilgrimages since the seventeenth century, the centuries-old place of worship is known as the “Oratory of the ants” due to a singular natural phenomenon (a miracle, according to some): every two years, thousands of winged ants came to die on the threshold of the oratory, now consecrated as a sanctuary. This singular event took place on 8 September, the day of the “Nativity of Mary” (to which, in fact, the oratory is dedicated).
